SM Prime Unveils P7-Billion Cebu Arena to Enhance Tourism

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. has officially inaugurated the SM Seaside Cebu Arena, a significant addition to its South Road Properties (SRP) estate in Cebu City. The arena, which represents a P7-billion investment, aims to enhance the region's appeal as a hub for live entertainment and large-scale events.

At the launch event, attended by around 400 representatives from various sectors including entertainment and tourism, SM Prime President Jeffrey C. Lim highlighted the arena's potential to attract both local and international acts. Lim stated that Cebu has long been one of the country’s most dynamic markets and that with this arena, they can bring more Filipino and international acts to the Visayas and strengthen the region’s place in the live entertainment circuit.

Designed by the global architecture firm Arquitectonica, the arena spans over seven hectares and can accommodate up to 25,000 guests, making it the largest indoor events venue in the Visayas. The facility features the region's largest center-hung display system, catering to a variety of events from concerts to corporate gatherings.

Lim emphasized that this investment will generate economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs and nearby communities. The arena is strategically located with direct access to SM Seaside City Cebu, the upcoming SMX Convention Center Seaside Cebu, and two hotels, Park Inn by Radisson and Radisson Hotel, creating a comprehensive lifestyle hub.

The arena's inaugural events calendar will kick off with the BINI Signals World Tour on July 11, followed by performances from notable artists such as IV of Spades, TJ Monterde, KZ Tandingan, Hillsong Worship, and LANY. This lineup is expected to attract a significant number of visitors, further boosting the local tourism economy.

As the Philippines continues to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, investments like the SM Seaside Cebu Arena are seen as crucial for revitalizing the tourism sector.

In the broader context of Southeast Asia's tourism landscape, Thailand's media has noted a shift in the competitive dynamics of the region. While Thailand remains a leading destination with nearly 33 million inbound arrivals in 2025, it has experienced a 7 percent decline compared to the previous year, indicating a potential challenge as other countries, particularly Vietnam, gain traction. Vietnam recorded 21 million arrivals in the same year, marking a significant rise in its appeal as a tourist destination.

Indonesian coverage has pointed out that the Philippines lags behind its regional peers, with only 6 million foreign visitors in 2025, a stark contrast to Thailand and Vietnam. This disparity highlights the Philippines' ongoing struggle to capture a larger share of the tourism market, despite the potential that new venues like the Cebu Arena present.

Furthermore, both Indonesian and Thai media have reported on a regional trend towards attracting fewer, higher-spending tourists. Thailand has implemented stricter visa regulations and is focusing on quality over quantity in its tourism strategy. This approach mirrors Indonesia's recent regulatory oversight of foreign visitors, particularly targeting digital nomads and content creators. In contrast, Filipino stakeholders are optimistic that the new arena will not only enhance local tourism but also position Cebu as a competitive player in this evolving market.

As the Philippines seeks to revitalize its tourism sector, the opening of the SM Seaside Cebu Arena may play a pivotal role in attracting both local and international visitors, but it must navigate a challenging landscape where neighboring countries are also adapting their strategies to enhance their tourism appeal.
