Japan's Sumitomo and Hankyu to Pilot Energy-Saving Technology on LRT-1
The collaboration aims to enhance energy efficiency on Metro Manila's Light Rail Transit Line 1, potentially powering 2,000 households.

Japanese trading firm Sumitomo Corporation and railway operator Hankyu Corporation are preparing to launch a pilot project on Metro Manila's Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), which is expected to save enough electricity to power approximately 2,000 households. This initiative aligns with the Philippine government's commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 75% by 2030 under the Paris Agreement, as reported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The project is expected to commence in July 2025 and conclude in May 2026. It aims to implement advanced energy conservation measures, including the introduction of regenerative energy loss prevention systems and the enhancement of energy-efficient driving techniques, leveraging Japanese expertise in railway operations. JICA has stated that the technical assistance provided will not only improve operational efficiency but also lower operational costs and mitigate environmental impacts.
“Sumitomo has long been one of the Philippines' most valued partners. We look forward to deepening this partnership through strategic investments in infrastructure and other key sectors that will strengthen our competitiveness and support our long-term economic development.”Frederick Go, Finance Secretary
Sumitomo has a longstanding relationship with the Philippines, having invested in various transport infrastructure projects over the past four decades, including the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and the ongoing expansion of LRT-1. Recently, Finance Secretary Frederick Go noted that Sumitomo is exploring further investments in the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) and renewable energy projects, which could enhance the overall efficiency of railway operations.
“JICA has stated that the technical assistance project has significant potential to enhance energy efficiency of railway operations in the Philippines.”JICA
The LRT-1, which runs some 20 kilometers, is a critical part of Metro Manila's public transportation system. The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), which operates the line, is currently extending the rail service by some seven kilometers, installing five new stations along the way. Services along the extended section are scheduled to start by the end of 2024. This extension is anticipated to significantly improve access to the metropolitan area.
Japanese firms continue to show interest in the Philippine railway sector, reflecting ongoing efforts to develop and modernize the country's transport systems.
