Malaysia's Animation Future: Calls for Stronger Industry Framework Amid MIFA Success
As Malaysia celebrates a significant investment in animation, industry leaders push for a dedicated animation division within FINAS.

Malaysia achieved a significant milestone in its animation industry by securing RM249.2 million in investments during its participation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market (MIFA) 2026. This figure surpassed the initial target of RM100 million, underscoring Malaysia's potential as a competitive hub for animation and creative content.
The Ministry of Communications led Malaysia's participation, collaborating with the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) and involving 11 local animation companies that promoted their intellectual properties and technical expertise to global players. This initiative reflects the government's strategy to strengthen Malaysia's position in the international animation market.
“The contribution of the animation sector to the economy cannot be denied, with successful exports such as Upin & Ipin.”Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications
Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil highlighted the need to establish a dedicated animation division within FINAS to support the local animation industry, which has historically attracted international studios seeking Malaysian animation talent. He noted the economic contribution of the animation sector and cited the success of the series Upin & Ipin in Indonesia as an example of local intellectual property gaining international recognition.
Fahmi also mentioned that in discussions with the Malaysian Animation Association (ANIMAS), the association reported that around 2,000 of its members are currently facing challenges due to a lack of job opportunities in the sector. He stressed the urgency of setting up the animation division within FINAS to address these issues and foster comprehensive development in the industry.
“With specific attention from the Ministry of Communications, efforts will be made to expedite the animation division project despite delays caused by the pandemic and technological changes.”Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications
Efforts are underway to revitalize the animation sector, including increasing the number of animated titles produced to create more job opportunities and ensure sustainability. Fahmi said that with specific attention from the Ministry of Communications, they will strive to expedite this project, which has faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving technological specifications.
The process of acquiring and relocating FINAS's new headquarters at Menara FINAS Damansara is also being reviewed to meet project requirements before the move. While the office tower structure is nearly complete, the production studio is still being finalized due to changes in equipment specifications, with hopes to complete the relocation by the end of the year.
