Search Operations Continue After KM Virgo Transport 8 Sinking: 42 Confirmed Dead

The tragic sinking of the KM Virgo Transport 8 in Indonesia's Java Sea has resulted in a confirmed death toll of 42, as search and rescue teams continue to recover bodies from the wreckage. On September 24, 2026, authorities reported that divers had retrieved 14 additional bodies from inside the vessel, bringing the total number of recovered individuals to 150, according to the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).

As of now, 108 passengers have been rescued, while 93 remain unaccounted for. The search operations are being conducted both underwater and from the air, utilizing helicopters and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to assess the wreck's condition. The underwater visibility has reportedly improved, aiding divers in their efforts to locate additional victims.
