Indonesia's QRIS Payment System Surpasses 15 Billion Transactions

As of July 2026, Indonesia's Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) has recorded over 15 billion transactions, highlighting a robust growth in digital payment adoption across the country. Bank Indonesia (BI) reported that the number of users has reached 67 million, with the QRIS system supported by 96 banks, 60 non-bank institutions, and four switching companies.

Deputy Governor of BI, Filianingsih Hendarta, noted the significant impact of QRIS on transaction behavior, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when traditional payment methods faced challenges. Filianingsih mentioned that by July 2026, the volume of transactions had already reached 15 billion during the Lampung Financial Festival.

The growth of QRIS is also reflected in the expanding network of merchants accepting this payment method, which has now surpassed 45 million, exceeding the population of some neighboring countries. This extensive merchant network facilitates easier access to digital payments for consumers.

Furthermore, the QRIS system has ventured into cross-border transactions, connecting Indonesia with six countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, and China. This development allows Indonesian travelers to make payments without the need to exchange cash, simplifying transactions abroad. BI reported that inbound transactions from foreign tourists using QRIS in Indonesia reached approximately Rp5.9 trillion (around $326.3 million) with nearly 19.76 million transactions recorded.

“Filianingsih indicated that QRIS has already gone cross-border.”Filianingsih Hendarta, Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia

Filianingsih emphasized that the QRIS system is not only thriving domestically but is also expanding its international footprint. She indicated ongoing discussions with other countries, including Hong Kong, Timor Leste, India, and Saudi Arabia, to further enhance cross-border payment capabilities.

“Destry noted that the growth of digital transactions is supported by a stable payment infrastructure and a healthy industry structure.”Destry Damayanti, Acting Governor of Bank Indonesia

In addition to QRIS, the overall volume of digital transactions in Indonesia reached 5.5 billion, growing 28.69% year-on-year. This growth is supported by a stable payment infrastructure and a healthy industry structure, according to BI's acting Governor, Destry Damayanti. Transactions via the internet and mobile applications also saw significant increases, with mobile app transactions growing by 24.25% year-on-year.

As digital payment systems continue to evolve, Bank Indonesia remains committed to ensuring the availability of sufficient currency and maintaining high-quality banknotes across all regions, including remote and underserved areas.
