The European Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT) has presented Laos with an award for World's Best Tourist Destination for 2013 in Vientiane.
The honourable award demonstrates the great achievements of tourism development in Laos as well as the impressive tourist attractions and services offered by the land-locked country for tourists from across the world.
Tourism is now the second largest income earner for Laos after the mining sector. In 2012, the industry generated about US$514 million with the number of global visitors to Laos reaching 3.3 million people, an increase of 22 percent compared with the previous year. Not only does it stimulate economic growth, but also generate income for the poor.
The Laotian government estimates that the number of tourist arrivals could reach 3.42 million in 2013, 3.58 million in 2014 and 3.74 million in 2015, and 4.5 million people by 2020.
