7 amazing things you can do with watermelon

Watermelons are synonymous with summer, sweetness and sticky fingers. This hydrating melon is so much fun to eat, we’re attempting to grow an heirloom variety in our garden for the very first time this year.

But aside from eating it in giant slices and spitting the seeds on the lawn, what can you really do with watermelon?

The answer is: a lot.

Keep reading to discover why you should eat as much of this juicy fruit as possible, and then use the ideas below to make it part of your diet in unusual ways!

Health benefits of watermelon

Watermelons aren’t just Mother Nature’s attempt at a delicious dessert. This member of the gourd family is 92 percent water, making it a great choice for hydration during summer’s hot temperatures, but that other 8 percent is chock full of some pretty amazing nutritional benefits.

Watermelon is extremely alkaline-forming in the body, contains cancer-fighting lycopene, offers up many trace minerals, is full of fiber, can soothe sore muscles after a workout and may even have erectile dysfunction-fighting properties!!

Unusual ways to use watermelon

Now that you know why you should be eating more watermelon, let’s talk about how to sneak it into your life.

1. Salsa

Watermelon is a delicious addition to any salsa as the sweet, juiciness of the fruit helps to balance out the spiciness of other ingredients. You may add pineapple and mango as well.

2. Soup

Just like hot soup is a great way to warm up in the winter, cold soups are an excellent way to cool down in the summer! Tomato-based gazpacho becomes something new and delicious when blended with sweet watermelon and a squeeze of lime.

3. Pickles

In a recent post, we discussed vegetable tops that often get mistaken for inedible trash, and the same thing goes for melon rinds. After you’re done feasting on the pink flesh, let the green rinds sit in a combination of white vinegar and pickling spice. You won’t believe how yummy they taste!

4. Ice cubes

Want to make ice water even healthier? Substitute a frozen chunk of watermelon instead of the traditional ice cube. It’ll add flavor and nutrients while still keeping your beverage cold.

5. Salad topping

Strawberries, blueberries and other fruits are delicious in salad, so why not watermelon! The pink fruit will look gorgeous against your leafy greens as well.

6. Muffins

Did you know watermelon seeds are edible? They are! And like other nutritious seeds, they’re a great addition to muffins. “Roasted watermelon seeds taste more nutty than fruity, and they are the perfect compliment to sweet banana muffins,” explains

7. Juice

This is the absolute simplest way to enjoy watermelon, but it’s also one of the most satisfying. Simply give watermelon chunks a whirl in your blender and enjoy the juicy goodness through a straw. It’s better than iced tea without any added sugar!
